UI Anti-Pattern Watch: Search Box to Hell

Readers expect that when we use a search box on a blog, we’ll receive search results for that blog. Don’t mess with our expectations by including results from “across the network” or generic results from Google. The latter is a clue that you’ve messed up your Google Site Search configuration. The former is a sign you just care more about monetisation than you do about providing a good user experience for your readers.

finermac:

Apple made dozens of tiny wordings and grammatical fixes in Snow Leopard, including this one from engaging screen sharing via iChat. In Leopard, the message read “their”; now, “his or her.”

“Their” is perfectly grammatically correct and is far less awkward than “his or her”. Disappointing change.

ignore the code » Unread Links

Very nice and simple decoration for visited versus un-visited links. I’ve seen the use of images to decorate visited links before — sometimes to create a “scratched-through” effect as though writing on paper — but I like the approach of simulating a design pattern from desktop apps like Apple Mail.
